MADRID, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Three people died in a fire on Saturday morning in a 10-storey block of flats in Badalona, a residential town north of Barcelona in Spain, local Fire and Medical services confirmed.
The fire also left 15 people injured; three of whom (including a baby) are in a "serious" condition after jumping out of windows to escape the flames, while 13 people are reported to have suffered "light injuries."
The Fire and Medical Emergency Services of the Catalan Regional Authority (SEM) reported that the fire began shortly after 9 a.m. local time on Saturday morning in a block of flats in Marques de Mont-roig avenue, in Badalona.
Sixteen fire engines, including nine from the Catalan regional authority and seven from the Barcelona fire services, were able to bring the fire under control before midday.
Some of the residents had to be evacuated by mechanical ladders placed on the outside of the building and received treatment in nine ambulances which were also dispatched to the incident.
Firemen also evacuated the blocks on either side of the building affected by the fire and will now commence to investigate the cause of the tragedy.
